Choreographic Systems

After experiencing a number of different approaches to improvisation in her career from the tactile and instinctive nature of Contact Improvisation to the rigorous and cerebral Forsythe Improvisation Technologies, Prue developed her own approach to creating systems of generating and organizing movement in real-time.

These systems are based on what she calls 'physical thinking' - a kind of logic that one becomes familiar with when working with Prue for some time. Each system is developed according to the content and direction of each particular work and forms the basis of her creative process. So although there is an inherent logic that appears in all her works, these systems continually overlap, transform and re-define themselves.

During the workshop the dancers will be led, step by step, through a series of explorations and tasks that are largely based on the principles of connecting thinking, sensing and action. Further explorations and tasks will heighten the awareness of one's own idiosyncratic motion and propose tools to generate and modify the movement in alternative ways. When a real-time analysis of the body and an awareness of specificity is integrated by the dancer, a larger range of articulation and creative choice opens up.

After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Lang joined Meryl Tankard's Australian Dance Theatre. In 1996 she moved to France working with Compagnie L'Esquisse CNDC Angers (Bouvier/Obadia), Compagnie Cre-Ange in Paris as well as her own independant projects with visual artists. In 1999 she began an important collaboration with William Forsythe as a leading soloist and choreographer of the Frankfurt Ballett. During her tenure she created five works for the company, which also toured independently. Since 2005 she has been working as an independent choreographer presenting her work in international festivals, theatres and museums throughout the world. She has been voted Most Innovative Production and Most Outstanding Choreographer by Europe's Balletanz's Annual Critics' Survey. Her work often challenges formats for dance performance, embraces interdisciplinary collaboration and research, and incorporates real-time choreographic systems. Her latest work is a 'sustainable dance performance' that runs 100% on its own energy.
