A 2 week program of performances, conversations, events and encounters

Xavier Le Roy_In Public is a CREATIVE DIALOGUES joint initiative of the French Embassy in Australia, MPavilion, The Victorian College of the Arts - University of Melbourne, ACMI and Alliance Française Melbourne, led by DANCEHOUSE - with special thanks to Kaldor Public Art Projects and Carriageworks, Sydney. Film program presented in partnership with LE CND, Un Centre d'art pour la danse (Paris).

XAVIER LE ROY is one of the most influential choreographers and dance thinkers of our time.

Through his solo works such as Self Unfinished (1998) and Product of Circumstances (1999), Le Roy has identified new perspectives in the field of choreographic art and performance making.

Le Roy's work has been presented in diverse locations and situations the world over, including the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Centre Pompidou Paris, the Beirut Art Centre, Panorama Brazil and the Palace Gardens of Versailles, France.

His latest works: low pieces (2010), production (2011) created with Mårten Spångberg, untitled 2012 and Retrospective (2012), propose situations that explicitly explore the relationships between spectators/visitors/performers and the production of subjectivities.

"Rigorously simple and wildly imaginative…an invigorating theatrical experience."
- New York Times

Self-Unfinished, Le Roy's emblematic 1998 solo, is concerned with representations of the body and notions of subjectivity; in it, he morphs through bodily configurations ranging from identifiable human figure to animal, to machine. Performed in silence, Self-Unfinished proposes a world of multiple possibilities and reveals Le Roy's ongoing interest in the production of subjectivities and modes of communicativity.
