A dance on screen program featuring the work of some of the most influential French Choreographers of the past two decades including a new documentary on the American Godmother of them all - Yvonne Rainer, introduced by Xavier Le Roy.




Xavier Le Roy_In Public is a CREATIVE DIALOGUES joint initiative of the French Embassy in Australia, MPavilion, The Victorian College of the Arts - University of Melbourne, ACMI and Alliance Française Melbourne, led by DANCEHOUSE - with special thanks to Kaldor Public Art Projects and Carriageworks, Sydney. Film program presented in partnership with LE CND, Un Centre d'art pour la danse (Paris).

A dance on screen program featuring excerpts of some of the most intriguing and compelling conceptual pieces which have shaped and shaken French dance in the past 15 years; from Jérôme Bel, Alain Buffard and Xavier le Roy to, more recently, Myriam Gourfink, Noé Soulier and Boris Charmatz.

Drop in or stay for the whole compilation of selected titles, providing the perfect introduction to some of the main concepts and authors who investigated ground-breaking relationships to movement (or lack of movement), space, language, composition and the audience.

NETWORKS OF INTIMACY
A Julian Rosefeldt: Manifesto Public Program

Intimate networks of artists form a collective expression of a community and inform creative practice. To celebrate the opening of ACMI exhibition Manifesto, join us for an afternoon uncovering key thinking around critical theory and the creative manifestos that inform dance and performance.

This day will start with a panel discussion with local and international dance and performance luminaries, including Rebecca Hilton, Xavier Le Roy, Scarlet Yu and Atlanta Eke, uncovering the influence of manifestos by exploring key works from world renowned artists. The program will continue with screenings of Jerome Bel's VERONIQUE DOISNEAU (2004) and Christian Rizzo's 100% Polyester (1999) as well as the engaging documentary Feelings are Facts: The Life of Yvonne Rainer (2015).

This on-screen program features Umwelt by Maguy Marin, one of the most influential French choreographers to date, a series of excerpts exploring nudity in contemporary dance and a filmed conversation between Xavier Le Roy and Jérôme Bel.

 

xavier le roy (2000) - An interview between Xavier Le Roy and Jérôme Bel on the creation of the performance Xavier Le Roy by Jérôme Bel that radically calls into question the notion of authorship. The video will be screened continually (50'). In French with English subtitles

Nudity in Contemporary Dance (selected excerpts from Isadora Duncan to Jan Fabre, 50') - A selection of seminal excerpts from dance pieces that have explored nudity and a renewed perspective on the naked body as ungendered, desexualised object as subject matter.

Umwelt (filmed performance, 45') - Maguy Marin's works transcend all codes and formal constraints in order to invent new onstage forms in which music, text, theatre and dance interplay. Umwelt is a masterpiece created in 2003 which has been performed worldwide since. A Must See!
