Product of Circumstances

Biography as theory.  An autobiographical conference becoming a performance.  My body as raw material of social and cultural organization and as the practice of critical necessity.  Xavier Le Roy

The lecture-performance 'Product of Circumstances' (1999)  entices onto the slippery ice of biographical explanation. It casts a seemingly innocent glance in the rear-view mirror of the self and at the paradoxes of the science and art worlds. Le Roy relates how Le Roy grows into two systems, fails at fulfilling their expectations of accomodation, conforming more and more unwillingly to their rules, and finally, disillusioned, peels himself out. Power struggles over definitions do not interest him."

Circumstances: "I began to take two dance classes a week at the same time that I started to work on my thesis for my Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology. It's been now eight years that I have submitted my thesis and stopped to work as a biologist. Since I work as a dancer or choreograph I am very often presented as an atypical dancer or as a dancer molecular biologist. It became my currency in the "Society of the Spectacle". I was invited to prepare and present a lecture for an event on theory and praxis in performance
("Body currency" Wiener Festwochen June '98)..."

Xavier Le Roy

Xavier Le Roy worked as a researcher on molecular and cellular biology before turning his hand, mind and body to dance. His obsession for the study of the human body remained and has manifested in a series of seemingly simple but highly sophisticated solos that have seen him develop a reputation around the world.
