Dancehouse stands on what always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We pay our respects to the traditional owners of this land, the Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation, to their elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

After a sold-out 2019 season, Sangam: Festival of Performing Arts of South Asia and Diaspora returns to Dancehouse with a new dance commissioning initiative. From the experimental to the classical, in 2021, in partnership with Dancehouse, Sangam seeks to support the development and presentation of up to 6 new dance and movement works by South Asian and Diaspora artists, live or digitally.

We will be working with and will be guided by First Nations artists and BlakDance for the Sangam Festival on the unceded lands of the Kulin Nation.

The selected works will be provided:

  • Time and space at Dancehouse for development
  • Renowned international and local mentors
  • Peer and industry feedback
  • Performance outcome as part of Sangam 2021 at Dancehouse
  • $750-$1,500 in fees (dependent on the scale of the project)
  • Support preparing applications for additional funding
  • COVID-safe adaptation support where required

Applications/applicants must:

  • Be South Asian and/or have a definitive connection to South Asia
  • Be based in Victoria for live performances (but can nationally or internationally based for digital work)
  • Have an established dance practice and be able to demonstrate their ability to create high-quality work
  • Have no more than three contributing artists
  • Have pre-recorded soundtracks OR work with sound artists (as part of the project team)
