Dancehouse is on Wurundjeri Country. We offer our respects to the Wurundjeri woi-wurrung people — and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people — who continue to dance on Country, and have done, for thousands of generations. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Skinner Release Technique (SRT) — Wendy Smith

Skinner Release Technique (SRT) with a splash of embodied anatomy

Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a dance technique created by Joan Skinner that uses imagery and hands on tactile studies to foster a deeper kinaesthetic experience of movement. The images used in this technique are metaphors for movement principles within natural laws of relativity. The imagery is interwoven with music and sound that taps into the imagination, triggering spontaneous improvised movements allowing technical growth and creative process to be integrated.

Part of the classes will involve partner graphics, where we can feel ourselves letting go of habitual holding patterns. Out of these, movement unfolds, sometimes in quiet gentle ways, sometimes in surprising, inventive and energetic ways. Integration of technical growth with creative process is a unique aspect of this work.

In this series of 7 classes, we’ll get to play with connecting physicality and technical growth with our imagination.

Wendy will guide you through a deep understanding of embodied anatomy and structural integration with the creative and transformative imagery of Skinner Releasing Technique.

SRT is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned and professional dancers, actors, musicians, artists of all kinds, and all people interested in moving with ease.

Whilst these classes can be taken individually preference will be given to those who engage in the full series.

Wendy has a background in contemporary dance and spent significant time in the USA training with Joan Skinner. She is currently Australia’s only qualified Skinner Releasing Technique® teacher.

As well as studying contemporary dance with Margaret Lasica, Dancing with State of Flux Dance Company, Wendy taught in the Dance Department of the Victorian College of the Arts and Music for over two decades.  During this time she has also worked as a Structural Integrator, Remedial Massage Therapist and runs a Pilates Practice.
