Kathak Indian Classical Dance

Three back to back days of intensive and fun workshops in the Indian classical dance style of Kathak, exploring aspects of rhythm, musicality, storytelling and building a repertoire. The sessions would include introduction to foundational Kathak vocabulary such as rhythmic footwork, hand and body movements, chakkar (spins) building up to short phrases. We will also apply the techniques learnt to choreograph a short piece of pure Kathak performance. No prior experience in Indian dance is required.

A dancer, choreographer, architect and space-maker, Shinjita’s work aims to facilitate interactions between movement and architecture at public spaces. Starting at an early age of five, she trained in BharatNrityam under the tutelage of Roshmi Bandopadhyay (disciple of Dr. Padma Subramaniam) and in Kathak from pioneers in modern practices such as Manjari Chaturvedi, Puloma Sen, Amit Khinchi and Shubhi Johari. After finishing her B.Arch from New Delhi and MA in Performance Training from Plymouth, U.K., she is currently pursuing a practice led creative PhD at VCA Dance (UniMelb). Through her diverse learning and lived experiences, Shinjita aims to apply her Indian classical dance knowledge in relevant contemporary choreographic narratives.
