The Poetic Body: Butoh Workshop — Helen Smith
The Poetic Body: Butoh Workshop for all skill levels
If left to its own devices, what would the body like to say to us and share with audiences? What hidden secrets would it reveal if we “drop a step ladder deep into (our) own bodies and climb down it?” (Hijikata).
Drawing on the invisible and visible techniques of Butoh, this workshop unleashes all that is buried within to reveal what is hidden from ourselves, to uncover not only the shadows but also shed light on the great potential for love and beauty, to connect with the universal and to find poetic ways to express what is revealed to us.
Helen Smith is a physical theatre practitioner with Butoh at the heart of her practice since 1992. She credits Zen Zen Zo as her initial introduction to Butoh. She has trained for 8 years in Japan with Butoh masters including Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno, Natsu Nakajima, Dairakudakan, Seisaku and the late Yukio Waguri. In 2013, she wrote a thesis as part of her masters in theatre research at Monash University, titled Being Moved: The Transformative Power of Butoh. Helen performs as a member of the Space Between Performance Collective with Gabrielle New and Bodyweather-based, site-specific performance group, the Environmental Performance Authority.
