— Rewriting tragedy

Agitato is an encounter with Fanny Mendelssohn’s largely unknown ‘Allegro molto agitato in D Minor’ (1823), a small jewel buried in the truncated past of a musical career obscured by conventions.

Delivering a corporeal rather than a historical reflection on the music, Agitato uses every piano key in the manuscript as choreographic control in the agitated space. Its form becomes a whirlwind of confrontation between Fanny’s perfection in musicality and Jo’s impulse to provide a counterbalance that tackles formalism — a counter aesthetic.

An interaction of sustained hesitation and restraint set within a chaotic undercurrent. Agitato leaves chance within the body of the dance and the dancers to locate systems contained in the chaos.

Lloyd underlines the complexity of the formalised difficulty in Fanny’s music through a contemplation of the stillness of her concealment and the aftermath of its defiance.

The dance, formlessness formalised, becomes a palimpsest of the music seen through a contemporaneous mirror. The outcome laid out as a public offering — an understanding between centuries, from one to another.

Jo Lloyd is a dance artist based in Melbourne, Naarm, working with choreography as a social encounter, revealing behaviour over various durations and contexts. Her practice seeks to find a language that refuses the limits of history, form and aesthetic. She has presented and performed her work in galleries, museums and theatres both nationally and internationally including commissions with Nibroll Japan, New Zealand Dance Company, Rising, Bundanon Museum of Art, Tasdance, Dancenorth, Chunky Move and ACCA. After graduating from the VCA, Jo worked with Chunky Move/ Gideon Obarzanek, Shelley Lasica and Sandra Parker. She has received several Green Room nominations and awards, including three for her work Overture, Arts House 2018 and Melbourne Festival 2019. Recent works include; Out of Theatre, NGV and FM Air, The National 4 in 2023, Handsome, The Substation 2022, Archive the archive, for NGA’s Know My Name exhibition 2020 and DOUBLE DOUBLE created and performed with Deanne Butterworth, Tina Havelock Stevens and Evelyn Morris. Jo creates/ presents work out of Studio 24, Abbotsford Convent with producer Michaela Coventry.

Duane Morrison graduated from Melbourne University, majoring in Composition. Now working mainly in the field of electronic music production his skills in this area cover wide terrain. Active in the composition of scores for contemporary dance in Melbourne, he has collaborated closely with choreographer Jo Lloyd for 20 years, receiving a Green Room Award (Music Composition and Sound Design for Dance) for his work on Lloyd and Nicola Gunn’s Mermermer (Next Move 2016). He also received Green Room nominations for Overture (2019), Future Perfect (2011/ Dance Massive 2013) and Apparently That’s What Happened (2008 with David Franzke).

Andrew Treloar is an artist working between contemporary art, dance and fashion design through multiple practices and collaborations. These include Jo Lloyd, Henry Jock Walker, Dancenorth, Marrugeku, Lucy Guerin Inc., Daniel Riley (for the Kentucky Ballet), The Australian Ballet and Chunky Move. His work has been shown across venues and festivals including the 2018 Commgames Opening Ceremony.

Anny Mokotow had a career as performer, lecturer, and dramaturg, She worked in the Netherlands and Europe as dancer and theatre maker with Krisztina de Chatel, Blok and Steel, Onafhankelijk Toneel and others. She was co-artistic director of the multicultural, Vier-7, and interdisciplinary company Fractured Fables. As dramaturg in Australia, Anny has worked with Anouk Van Dijk (Chunky Move), Jo Lloyd, Tina Havelock Stevens, and others, while teaching theatre practice at NIDA, VCA and Uni Melb. Her research is on 20th- and 21st-century performance and dramaturgy; her current concerns lie in the response of performance practice in times of crisis.

Shiv Geaney is a versatile Lighting Designer and Production Manager celebrated for their innovative work across Australia’s performing arts. They have held pivotal roles at Chunky Move and the Victorian College of the Arts, where their technical expertise and leadership have shaped numerous productions. Shiv’s accolades include Best Lighting Design for Drill’s Trash This Place and standout designs for Sarah Kane’s 4:48 Psychosis directed by Justin Nott. Their ongoing collaboration with First Nations dance artist Ngioka Bunda-Heath has produced the acclaimed work Birrpai, showcasing their commitment to culturally significant storytelling through technical excellence.

Harrison Ritchie-Jones is an independent dancer, choreographer and filmmaker based in Naarm, Melbourne. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2014 and has worked with many of Australia’s most renowned choreographers since including; Stephanie Lake, Antony Hamilton, Jo Lloyd, Lucy Guerin, Melanie Lane, Graeme Murphy, Alisdair Macindoe, Prue Lang and Shelley Lasica.

Lee Serle is a Naarm/Melbourne based choreographer and performer and has presented his work to critical acclaim worldwide, creating dances on all scales, from grand stages to the intimate and personal, commissioned by the Trisha Brown Dance Company, Lucy Guerin Inc, Lyon Opera Ballet, Dancenorth, Sydney Dance Company, among many others. Lee has received fellowships from Chloe Munroe Bequest, Creative Australia, Rolex Arts Institute, City of Sydney, and been nominated for numerous Australian Dance and Greenroom Awards throughout his career. Lee is Resident Director for Lucy Guerin Inc. 2025.

Thomas Woodman is a Naarm/Melbourne-based dancer and choreographer who works in various contexts. He completed a BFA in Dance (2015) with Honours through the Visual Art School (2019) at the Victorian College of the Arts. As a performer, Thomas has worked with a number of artists, including Russell Dumas and particularly Jo Lloyd of late (since 2018). He approaches choreography as an equally conceptual and material form, with an interest in human and non-human encounters, the micro and macro, multiplicity, the influence of mass media, and the function of imagination in performance and beyond.

Michaela Coventry’s career as a creative producer spans 25 years and all artforms. With Sage Arts she works with some of Australia’s leading independent dance artists including: Jo Lloyd, Juliet Burnett, Lee Serle and Harrison Ritchie-Jones. In 2024 she established Studio 24 at Abbotsford Convent with Jo Lloyd.
