Creature
by Katrina Rank

— Hard bodies, soft plastics
Historically, bodily transformation has been seen as the province of mental illness or possession, the metamorphosis viewed as dangerous, demonic, uncontrollable.
Presenting a subject in myriad stages of becoming, Creature is an inextricable assemblage of human and non-human parts and the resultant haptic resonances.
Creature approaches the choreography between flesh, plastic and fabric. A contemplative offering for those drawn to the speculative, the poetic, and the quietly strange.
Costume, choreography, performance: Katrina M Rank
Iterations of Creature have been supported by Yarra City Council, City of Darebin and HillsceneLIVE.
Katrina Rank is a performance-based artist whose interdisciplinary work explores embodied histories, social tensions and environmental issues through a hybrid practice that includes costumography.
An overachiever, she’s a result of a big family, multiple mental health crises, highly disciplined dance training, degrees in education and philosophy and a longish life. She’s a self-taught costume designer, maker and animator. Of necessity, she’s also a producer, director, writer, film editor and administrator.
Creature would like to thank Shannon Parsons, Professor Kim Vincs, Associate Professor and Petra Gemeinboeck for their guidance and support.
Creature gratefully acknowledges the contribution of previous performers Angelina Nicole, Holly Marshall, Belinda Cussen, Kathryn Niesche, Suzanne Fermanis and Jenny Barnett without whom the evolution of this work would not be possible.
