Odissi Nrityagatha
Sohamasmi Centre for Performing Arts and Smt. Monica Singh Sangwan

The Sohamasmi Centre for Performing Arts commenced its journey in 2003 as an Oḍissi dance school in a modest basement in Gurgaon, India, founded by Smt. Monica Singh Sangwan. Today, we are a diverse community of dancers spanning all ages and ethnicities in Melbourne, celebrating our 21st year. Sohamasmi warmly invites you to join us in experiencing Nṛtya Sēvā, our joyful offering of dance.
Bhārat’s sacred dance, as described in ancient texts, fosters qualities such as self-confidence, fortune, intelligence, liberality, pleasure, peace, patience, and fortitude. It also serves to dispel misery, affliction, sorrow, and despondency. These sacred dance forms provide a pathway to achieving the four essential pillars of human life: a balanced dutiful life, wealth, the enjoyment of physical desires, and liberation.
At Sohamasmi, we embrace the modernity of cosmopolitan life while staying rooted in the values embodied by our art form, Odissi. In a world often torn by divisive forces eroding humanity’s core values, our art offers solace, warmth, serenity, and an unwavering belief in a future built on balance.
Join us over two Saturdays, to experience our offering accompanied by live music from our local ensemble of musicians and dancers dedicated to the art of Oḍissi Nṛtya. Each performance will be unique and will showcase the calibre and journey of learning the art of Oḍissi. Our dearest Guru, Smt. Monica Singh Sangwan, will also be delighting the stage in each of these four sessions.
