Dancehouse is on Wurundjeri Country. We offer our respects to the Wurundjeri woi-wurrung people — and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people — who continue to dance on Country, and have done, for thousands of generations. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Submerge

Emerging Choreographers Program

1/1
12 — 13 December 2020

The artists participating in Submerge have donated their time over the past few weeks. As such, the works involved are in varying stages of completeness. 100% of all ticket costs will be contributed to Pay the Rent. The artists encourage you to pay the rent further if you are able.

About Bookings:

The Submerge program is grouped into six sessions that each present works by between two or three artists and one stand alone work. To see all the artists’ works, you must book into multiple sessions. With minimum capacities in venues this year, we ask that you respect your reservation and the amazing artists and creatives performing, regardless of cost. If you’re feeling unwell or can no longer join us, please let us know by 1pm Friday 11 December so we can offer your seat to someone else.

Held over one weekend at Dancehouse, Submerge presents 11 works from 14 cutting-edge, emerging dance artists.

Made up of performances, research sharings, workshops, and installations, these artists with diverse practices stand on the precipice of “what comes next”. Their distinct works range from the conventional to the unconventional: from looping choreographies, to the physical re-birthing from a pile of compost.

Submerge sees these artists reawakening their practice in a new context.  Connected by the artists’ experience of “newness” as they continue to create in this precarious and distanced world, the program of performances presents pieces in varying stages of completeness. It connects the artists and entangles their practices. Within this context, no singular project exists in isolation, but rather alongside one another, as part of a relational whole.

Submerge invites audiences to go under(/sub), to immerse(/merge) themselves as these dance artists re-emerge within the “now”.
