Dancehouse is on Wurundjeri Country. We offer our respects to the Wurundjeri woi-wurrung people — and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people — who continue to dance on Country, and have done, for thousands of generations. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Jamstas warmly invite you to an afternoon of dancing (jamming), sharing (viewing) and talking (group discussing) Contact Improvisation (CI).

The afternoon will begin with a led warmup and physical introduction to CI into open dancing. Stay on to witness some ad hoc CI performance experiments in the spirit of “You come, we’ll show you what we do” (CI performance with Steve Paxton and others in New York in 1972). We will finish the afternoon with a discussion (history, reflections, questions, etc) and snacks.

This event is for anyone who is curious, whether you are new to the form or decades-in, we are all starting again. No previous experience is necessary.

You are welcome to join in for the whole afternoon or any part of it you want to:

  • 1—3pm: Dancing with lead warm-up introduction
  • 3—4pm: Sharing
  • 4—5pm: Talking (snacks will be provided)

This afternoon will be facilitated by Contact Improvisation Melbourne, a collective of people who have been supporting the development of CI for more than 25 years.
